Lonsdale & Gayton Pools Support Drowning Prevention Week

At Lonsdale and Gayton Pools, swimming is more than just a weekly activity, it
is a life skill. That is why Drowning Prevention Week is such an important
moment in the calendar for both pools, giving the team a valuable opportunity
to help children, families and the wider community feel safer and more
    confident in and around water.

As community-based swimming pools with a strong focus on swimming
lessons, Lonsdale and Gayton are passionate about teaching people of all ages
how to swim. From building water confidence in young swimmers to helping
children understand how to stay safe near open water, the aim is always the
same: to give every swimmer the skills, knowledge and confidence they need.

    Bringing Water Safety to Life

Throughout Drowning Prevention Week, the teams at Lonsdale and Gayton
Pools carried out a range of water safety activities designed to be engaging,
    memorable and practical.

Swimming instructors worked with the children on key skills such as floating
to breathe, staying calm in the water and understanding how to help someone
who may be in difficulty. The children also discussed rescue techniques, with a
focus on what to do around rivers, lakes and other open water environments.
Instructors talked about safe items that could be used to assist someone in the
water, such as sticks, clothing or balls, helping children understand how these
could be used to bring a person closer to the side without putting themselves
at risk. They also covered what should never be done, including entering the
    water after someone in difficulty.

The children learned who to call in an emergency, including 999 and 112, and
practised how to throw something safely to a casualty in the water. They also
learned what to say to reassure and guide someone while help is on the way.
These sessions helped children understand that water safety is not just about
being able to swim lengths. It is also about knowing how to stay calm, make
safe choices and recognise potential dangers around pools, rivers, lakes,
beaches and other bodies of water.

Learning Skills That Could Save Lives

For many children, swimming lessons are where their relationship with water
begins. The teams at Lonsdale and Gayton Pools work hard to make that
experience positive, supportive and fun, while also making sure key safety
    messages are built into learning.

Drowning Prevention Week gave instructors the chance to focus even more
closely on those essential safety messages, helping children build practical
knowledge that could make a real difference in an emergency.

    A Community Effort

Lonsdale and Gayton Pools are proud to be part of their local communities.
Whether families visit for weekly swimming lessons, public swim sessions or
school swimming, the pools play an important role in helping people feel
comfortable and confident in the water.

The response during Drowning Prevention Week was fantastic, with
swimmers taking part enthusiastically and families engaging with the
important safety messages being shared. It was a brilliant reminder of how
powerful community pools can be, not only as places to swim, but as spaces
where people learn skills that stay with them for life.

    More Than Swimming Lessons

While both Lonsdale and Gayton Pools offer public swimming sessions,
teaching swimming remains at the heart of what they do. Every lesson is an
opportunity to build confidence, improve technique and support safer
    swimmers.

Drowning Prevention Week was a chance to shine a light on that wider
purpose. It highlighted the dedication of the teaching teams and the
importance of giving children and adults the knowledge they need to enjoy the
    water safely.

A huge well done to everyone who took part in Drowning Prevention Week at
Lonsdale and Gayton Pools, and thank you to the instructors, families and
swimmers who helped make it such a meaningful week.
